As has been the case for any news outlet during the past three years, a major strategical consideration for The Spinoff was how we communicated Covid-19. As an organisation, we worked alongside the WHO, as science communicator Siouxsie Wiles and Illustrator Toby Morris crafted some of the world’s best Covid-19 communications. As Social Media Manager, I took ownership of building our social strategy around those renowned communications, as well as crafting quick-turnaround social communications on an ongoing basis, ensuring to undertake the same considerations to tone and storytelling as the wider news team.
The pandemic in New Zealand was a unique landscape, due to our intense restrictions and consistent government communications. The news, in response, had to communicate to a huge audience in record speed and with extreme accuracy. Our social strategy was built around social-first content being created in tandem with the news team, as information was being released to the whole country, on a daily basis.
